Gabriela Alvarez-Castañeda

Originally from Guatemala, Gabriela has been studying dance since she was 3. She has danced for the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism Modern and Folk Dance Company, the Guatemala City Choreographic Workshop, and Guatemala Identity (a contemporary and folk dance company). In 2004, after years of scholarship with prima ballerina Reyna Silva, Gabriella started teaching ballet. She has choreographed for the Guatemala City Ballet and taught for its associated ballet school, founded the Association for Research, Education, and Performing Arts at Rafael Landivar University, and co-founded its Certification Program in Performing Arts.

Since arriving in New York, Gabriela has furthered her teaching education with The National Dance Institute of New York, the Foundation of Dance Education, and Hunter College’s Dance Education Program. Gabriela dances for Coopdance Inc., is the Co-founder and choreographer of Bula Dance Company, and is on the faculty of the Ballet Hispanico School of Dance.
